mcaf 2010 work

title:“Bonfire” sandstone
artist:Tomiyuki MARUYAMA

My sculptures are of two types – works where I have sculpted the outside of the stone (carved the stone) working towards the center of the stone, and works where I have carved out the center of the stone (sculpting an empty space) leaving the outside shape of the stone intact.
The work I am exhibiting here is of the first type. The piece has a planar structure, and I have sculpted the stone, working towards its center, mainly from the near side of the stone and from the far side of the stone.
In this way two of the surfaces of the stone swell outward.

Maruyama was born in Nagano Prefecture in 1956. He completed a degree in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts (formerly Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music) in 1986. Since 1986 Maruyama has continued to present his work, primarily in one-man exhibitions. Stone is his material, and he works to witness the appearance of something new from the relationship between stone and the human body.
